Rum
Rum is an alcoholic beverage made up of the distilled sugarcane juice or sugarcane molasses. Rum is produced in various countries like Caribbean , America , Philippines and India .
Rum produced in various grades and styles like light rum used in cocktails , golden and dark rum drinked straight or neat.
In most countries rum is used by the navy in the history and thus it became famous .
Production process
Harvesting
First sugarcane is harvested from the field. In old times it was done by human beings but now machine does the same work . After that sugarcane juice is extracted from the sugarcane .
Fermentation
Most rum is made by the molasses , the quality of rum depends on the sugarcane and the quality of sugarcane is depends on the soil.
The molasses is transferred into the containers where yeast and water is added to start the fermentation process.
Fermentation process goes on as per the distiller and what type of rum they are producing .
Distillation
After the fermentation process , distillation process take place that also depends on the distiller wether they are using pot still method or column still method.
As per the distillation process the amount of alcohol is increased in the rum .
Aging and blending
Many countries let the rum aged for one year . The aging is commonly done in Burbon barrels .
The aging process determines the colour of the rum when aged in oak barrels the colour of the rum comes dark but when they are aged in the stainless steel barrels the liquid comes colourless.
After aging the rum is usually Blended for the consistent flavour of the rum . For dark rum caramel is added for flavour .
Botteling
Final process is Botteling . Where rum is bottled with their respective bottles and the brand names.
